In response to escalating political tensions in Punjab, the Union Home Ministry has clarified that a proposal to bring Chandigarh under the President’s control is still in the consideration phase, with no final decision made. The Ministry confirmed that it will not introduce any related bill in the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament. This reassurance aims to diffuse the apprehension surrounding potential changes to Chandigarh’s administrative structure. The proposal, reportedly focused on simplifying law-making, is being examined by the central government. Officials highlighted that the existing governance framework and the traditional relations of Chandigarh with Punjab and Haryana will remain unaffected. A commitment was made to engage in thorough consultations with all stakeholders before any decision is finalized, with the interests of Chandigarh being a key consideration. The Ministry sought to alleviate concerns, assuring that the matter is being handled with due diligence.
