Chhattisgarh: 15 Naxalites, Including High-Value Targets, Renounce Violence

A significant development in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district saw fifteen Naxalites, including several with substantial bounties totaling Rs 48 lakh, surrender to authorities. The surrendered group comprised five women and members of the PLGA. Sukma Superintendent of Police Kiran Chavan confirmed the successful operation and noted the former militants’ statements. They cited the Chhattisgarh government’s dedicated development and rehabilitation efforts as the primary reason for their decision to leave the armed struggle. Specifically, the ‘Niyad Nellanar’ scheme, aimed at improving infrastructure in remote areas, and the ‘Poona Margham’ surrender and rehabilitation policy were highlighted as influential. Among those surrendering were four key PLGA members, including two couples, who individually carried Rs 8 lakh bounties. Others had bounties between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 5 lakh. In line with the government’s rehabilitation framework, each individual received an immediate Rs 50,000 and will receive further support for social reintegration. This surrender is part of a broader success in curbing Naxalite activities, with over 2,150 individuals having surrendered in Chhattisgarh over the past 23 months.
