Bijapur district in Chhattisgarh has seen a major turning point in the fight against Left Wing Extremism with the surrender of 51 Naxalites on Wednesday. A notable aspect of this mass surrender was the inclusion of 20 cadres who carried a combined bounty of Rs 66 lakh, signaling the departure of key figures. The surrender, which also included nine women, was facilitated by the ‘Poona Margem – Punarwas se Punarjeevan’ initiative, a rehabilitation program by the Bastar Range Police aimed at social integration. Officials attributed the rebels’ decision to renounce violence to the success of government-backed rehabilitation schemes and the positive impact of ongoing development works. This act is seen as a crucial step in the state’s efforts to combat Naxalism through dialogue and the promotion of a peaceful, developmental agenda. The surrendered cadres were part of various formations, including PLGA battalions and area committees, and their exit is anticipated to weaken the Maoist network’s operational capacity in the Bijapur region and surrounding areas.
