Echoing measures taken in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, Chhattisgarh has now mandated that all individuals entering jewelry stores must reveal their faces. The Chhattisgarh Sarafa Association has issued a directive prohibiting the entry of anyone wearing a burqa, mask, scarf, or any other item that conceals their face. This decision stems from a recent daring robbery in Rajim, which highlighted the challenges faced by law enforcement in identifying suspects who obscure their identities.

The association argues that clear identification is essential for the security of valuable assets and to facilitate investigations in case of incidents. Kamal Soni, the association’s president, stressed that the policy is purely a security measure and does not infringe upon religious or personal freedoms. “Our priority is to ensure a safe environment for everyone associated with the jewelry trade, from shopkeepers to customers,” he stated. Many business owners have lauded the initiative as a proactive approach to combatting the growing threat of robberies. Nevertheless, the rule has generated discussions within the community, particularly regarding its implications for Muslim women and individuals seeking protection from environmental factors. The association is poised to implement the ban strictly across the state, with the hope of enhancing safety and deterring criminal activities within jewelry establishments.
