Eighteen Naxalites, including a prominent commander, were eliminated by security forces during a major encounter in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district. The exchange of fire took place in the forest region straddling the Bijapur-Dantewada districts as part of a dedicated anti-Naxal operation. The death toll was confirmed at 18 after six additional bodies were recovered, following the initial neutralization of 12 insurgents. Security forces also recovered a significant haul of arms and ammunition, featuring INSAS and AK-47 rifles. Among the neutralized was Modiyam Vella, a company commander known for his involvement in past violent incidents, including the 2020 Minpa ambush which claimed 17 security personnel. Vella was a wanted Maoist with a reward of Rs 8 lakh. The operation, while a success, led to the martyrdom of three DRG personnel and injuries to two others. This year’s anti-Naxal operations in Chhattisgarh have resulted in the elimination of 275 Naxalites. However, 23 security personnel have also lost their lives in the state’s ongoing fight against insurgency.
