In a major counter-insurgency operation in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district, security forces have successfully neutralized 18 Naxalites. The encounter occurred in the dense forest areas near the border of Bijapur and Dantewada districts. Officials confirmed on Thursday that the toll reached 18, following the recovery of six more bodies after an initial count of 12. Among the neutralized rebels was Modiyam Vella, a significant commander of the People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA). Vella was a pivotal figure in Maoist activities and was wanted for his involvement in past ambushes, notably the 2020 Minpa attack that resulted in the deaths of 17 security personnel. A reward of Rs 8 lakh was active for information leading to his apprehension. The operation also led to the recovery of a substantial cache of arms and ammunition, including AK-47 and INSAS rifles. While celebrating this success, the forces also mourned the loss of three District Reserve Guard (DRG) personnel who were martyred during the intense exchange of fire. Two other DRG members were injured. This year’s operations in Chhattisgarh have resulted in the neutralization of 275 Naxalites, reflecting the ongoing commitment to eradicating left-wing extremism from the region, even amidst perilous circumstances.
