The Congress party has taken legal action against the Chhattisgarh government, filing a civil writ petition in the High Court concerning the size of the state’s cabinet. The central claim of the petition is that the cabinet’s current composition violates the constitutional limit on the number of ministers. The Constitution mandates that the number of ministers in a state cannot exceed 15% of the total strength of the Legislative Assembly. With 90 members in the Chhattisgarh assembly, the maximum number of ministers is 13.5. The Congress contends that with the inclusion of new ministers on August 20, bringing the total to 14, the government has overstepped these constitutional boundaries.
