In a major offensive against Left-wing extremism, Chhattisgarh security forces have successfully neutralized 18 Naxalites in an intense encounter in Bijapur district. The operation, launched in the forested region straddling Bijapur and Dantewada districts, culminated in a significant reduction of Maoist presence. The final casualty count of 18 insurgents was confirmed on Thursday after a comprehensive search and recovery operation.
Investigators have recovered a significant cache of arms and ammunition from the slain Naxalites, including powerful firearms such as AK-47 and INSAS rifles. A key leader among the deceased has been identified as Modiyam Vella, a commander known for his involvement in numerous attacks, including the 2020 Minpa ambush which cost the lives of 17 security personnel. Vella, carrying an Rs 8 lakh reward, was a high-priority target.
The bravery of the security forces was tested, resulting in the loss of three DRG personnel and injuries to two others. This year’s counter-insurgency efforts in Chhattisgarh have been particularly impactful, with 275 Naxalites neutralized, the majority in the Bastar region. Despite these successes, the persistent threat of Naxalism has resulted in the sacrifice of 23 security personnel this year, underscoring the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement.
