The health of young students is a primary concern for the Supreme Court as it navigates Delhi’s worsening air pollution. The apex court has recommended that the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) issue advisories to NCR schools to reschedule sports and athletic events slated for November and December. The court conveyed a strong sentiment that holding such events amidst hazardous air quality is detrimental to children’s well-being. Legal representatives voiced serious concerns, comparing the exposure to ‘gas chambers’. This judicial push for postponement aims to safeguard students from the toxic smog. The Supreme Court is actively monitoring the pollution situation and has also addressed related issues, including the provision of subsistence allowances for construction workers impacted by activity bans. Furthermore, the court has emphasized the need for proactive, well-considered government actions to combat pollution and has requested that the air pollution matter be placed on the court’s agenda monthly for continuous oversight.
