In response to Donald Trump’s proposal for tariffs on nations supporting BRICS’ ‘anti-American’ stances, China voiced its disapproval of trade wars and coercion. A spokesperson from the Foreign Ministry, Mao Ning, underscored the value of the BRICS alliance and its open approach to cooperation while criticizing the use of tariffs as a coercive tool. Trump’s statement on Truth Social implied a 10% tariff on countries perceived to be supporting anti-American policies within the BRICS framework, without clarifying which specific policies were targeted. This statement preceded the expected distribution of tariff-related communications by the US government. BRICS, composed of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, aims to shift global power dynamics and promote a multi-polar world. Trump’s comments came during the BRICS summit in Brazil, where member nations voiced their worries regarding unilateral tariff measures. The impact of Trump’s tariff warnings on ongoing trade talks between the US and certain BRICS members, such as India, remains uncertain. Earlier, Trump warned of a 100% tariff on BRICS members who supported a shared currency. Economic analysts have warned that Trump’s tariff strategies, especially those affecting Chinese imports, could lead to price increases for American consumers, potentially affecting retailers.
