China Disputes Harassment Allegations Over Arunachal Pradesh Passport Issue

China has officially denied allegations of harassment made by an Indian citizen at Shanghai Pudong Airport, where she claimed immigration officials challenged her Indian nationality and stated Arunachal Pradesh is Chinese territory. Prema Wangjom Thongdok, an Indian resident of Arunachal Pradesh, described an extended detention and questioning about her passport’s validity. In response, China’s Foreign Ministry asserted that the traveler’s “lawful rights and interests were fully protected” and no coercive measures were taken. India has strongly condemned the incident, lodging a formal diplomatic protest with Chinese authorities. The Indian Consulate in Shanghai also provided assistance to Thongdok. The traveler recounted being singled out and told that “Arunachal is not part of India” by immigration officials, who also allegedly suggested she obtain a Chinese passport. She noted that she was traveling on a valid Indian passport and had transited through Shanghai before without issue. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning reiterated Beijing’s stance, referring to the region as “Zangnan” and affirming China’s non-recognition of “Arunachal Pradesh.” She stated that Chinese border inspection procedures were conducted in accordance with the law, without detention or harassment. India has consistently rejected China’s claims over Arunachal Pradesh, firmly maintaining it is an integral part of India. The incident occurs at a time of ongoing diplomatic engagements between the two Asian giants, highlighting the sensitivity of territorial disputes.
