China is actively pursuing improved relations between India and Pakistan. This effort is highlighted by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s recent trip to India, where he met with Indian officials to discuss regional cooperation. China regards both India and Pakistan as essential neighbors, and it aims to cultivate friendly and collaborative ties with both. The Chinese Foreign Ministry has suggested that any issues between India and Pakistan should be resolved through dialogue, and China is willing to play a constructive role in the process. The statement reflects China’s desire to see a peaceful resolution and enhanced bilateral relations. Historically, China has sided with Pakistan in past conflicts with India, but now it is pushing for cooperation between the two countries. Pakistan is a major ally and partner in China’s Belt and Road Initiative. The current move by China to mediate comes as India has declined US mediation. Successful mediation could provide significant advantages for India, provided Pakistan addresses concerns related to terrorism and hostility. This might allow for enhanced trade opportunities, and potentially enable direct trade with Iran and Afghanistan via Pakistan.
