Babulal Marandi, the leader of the opposition in Jharkhand and state BJP chief, has accused the state government of resorting to fabricating new crimes to obscure the reality of rising criminal activities. He claims this practice has become routine for the government and its associated systems. The Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) recent probe into the vast coal mafia operations in Dhanbad has reportedly uncovered significant evidence. However, Marandi highlighted a more sinister development: allegations that influential police officers, allegedly profiting from the illegal coal trade, have issued ‘termination orders’ for foot soldiers of the mafia. This is purportedly to ensure that individuals interrogated by the ED cannot reveal incriminating information. Marandi drew parallels to past events in Jharkhand, where he claims ‘evidence elimination’ through staged encounters was a known tactic. He referred to a controversial former DGP accused of contract killings and egregious corruption, facing criticism even from allies in the ruling government. Marandi cautioned the ED to proceed with utmost diligence, stating that in Jharkhand, those who bury the truth often prosper over those who expose it. The convergence of political power, law enforcement, and organized crime, he warned, leaves little room for genuine justice.
