Tensions rose in Assam during Eid-ul-Zuha following incidents of illegal cattle slaughter. The state government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, reported 16 arrests. The illegal slaughter took place at various sites across the state. Incidents of unrest included road blockades and clashes with law enforcement in Hojai after reports of meat being found. The Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021 places restrictions on where cattle can be slaughtered, with certain areas being off-limits. The Chief Minister said that strict action would be taken against anyone who broke the law. Police are investigating reports of meat being found at various locations.
