In a new edict, the Taliban has ordered the removal of 51 subjects from the Afghan school curriculum, claiming they are contrary to Islamic principles. This action mirrors changes implemented in university courses. The subjects removed include lessons on the national flag, concepts of freedom and democracy, human and women’s rights, as well as peace initiatives and the Afghan national anthem. The curriculum alterations affected students from the first through twelfth grades. Furthermore, topics relating to the Buddhas of Bamiyan and commemorative days such as Teacher’s Day and Mother’s Day have been erased. The Taliban has not issued a public statement about this recent order. These measures are facing criticism from human rights organizations and education experts.
