The Israeli navy intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla, a humanitarian aid convoy aiming to reach Gaza. Activists from various nations were onboard, including Greta Thunberg, the Swedish environmental activist, who was detained. Following the interception, the Israeli Foreign Ministry released a video stating that those detained were safe and being transported to an Israeli port. The interception occurred amid a worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza, where the United Nations has issued warnings about widespread famine and malnutrition.
The Global Sumud Flotilla, considered the largest maritime humanitarian mission, departed Spain on August 31, 2025, with stops in Italy, Greece, and Tunisia. The mission comprised over 50 boats and included activists, parliamentarians, and social workers from 44 countries. The flotilla carried over 500 people, including Greta Thunberg, Mandla Mandela (grandson of Nelson Mandela), and Italian parliamentarians. Also participating were 24 American activists and military veterans. The flotilla’s goal was to challenge the 18-year-long Israeli naval blockade of Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid, including vital supplies like food, water, and medicine.
During its voyage, the flotilla faced challenges, with activists reporting drone attacks near Malta and Crete, which damaged some vessels. Despite these incidents, approximately 44 ships reached the eastern Mediterranean. Spain and Italy deployed warships to monitor the flotilla and provide support. European and other governments urged all parties to exercise restraint.
Israeli naval forces surrounded the flotilla approximately 130 kilometers from Gaza on Wednesday. Witnesses reported that Israeli ships employed bright lights and water cannons before boarding and seizing the vessels.
Israel had previously advised the activists to utilize the Ashkelon port for inspection and aid distribution, but the flotilla continued toward Gaza. Israel alleges connections between the flotilla and Hamas, citing security concerns. The organizers maintain that the mission is purely humanitarian, aimed solely at providing relief to the people of Gaza.
The Israeli blockade of Gaza has been in place since 2007, following Hamas’s assumption of power. The blockade has been further tightened since the October 2023 Hamas attacks and the ensuing conflict.
