Controversy Leads Maharashtra to Revoke Language Policy Resolutions

Due to increasing dissent over the inclusion of Hindi in Maharashtra schools, the state government has withdrawn two crucial Government Resolutions (GRs) pertaining to the three-language policy. The decision was announced by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at a press conference in Mumbai. A new committee, led by educationist Narendra Jadhav, will be formed to offer recommendations for the implementation of the language policy. Fadnavis emphasized that the previous government, under the leadership of Uddhav Thackeray, had agreed with the recommendations of the Dr. Raghunath Mashelkar committee to introduce the three-language policy from class 1 to class 12. Originally, the Fadnavis government’s GRs in April made Hindi a mandatory subject for students in classes 1 to 5 in English and Marathi medium schools. However, the government amended the GRs in June, making Hindi an optional subject.
