Cough Syrup ColdRif Banned in Tamil Nadu Due to Suspected Contamination and Child Deaths

The Tamil Nadu government has banned ColdRif cough syrup, ordering its immediate removal from the market. This action is a response to suspected links between the syrup and the deaths of children in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. The ban on the syrup, manufactured by a firm in the city, commenced on October 1st. Following the reports of child fatalities, inspections were conducted at the pharmaceutical company’s facility in Sunguvarchathram, Kancheepuram district. Samples of the medication have been collected for thorough testing. The collected samples will be sent to government laboratories to check for Diethylene Glycol contamination. The Union Ministry, addressing the situation, issued an advisory to all states and union territories, recommending that cough and cold medications not be prescribed to children under two years of age.
