India’s 15th Vice President, CP Radhakrishnan, was sworn in on September 12, 2025, at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The oath of office was administered by President Droupadi Murmu at 10:10 am. Radhakrishnan, a 67-year-old long-time BJP leader from Tamil Nadu and a product of the RSS, secured the vice-presidential election with 452 votes. His opponent, B Sudershan Reddy, representing the Opposition INDIA bloc and a former Supreme Court judge, received 300 votes. The outcome was expected, given the strong backing of the BJP-led NDA, which had the support of 427 MPs, and support from the YSR Congress Party and other smaller parties, surpassing the halfway mark. There were reports of cross-voting in Radhakrishnan’s favor. This election was necessitated by the unexpected resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21. Following his election, Radhakrishnan resigned as governor of Maharashtra. Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat is now handling the additional responsibilities of Maharashtra until a permanent appointment is made. Radhakrishnan, a two-time MP from Coimbatore and former BJP Tamil Nadu chief, began his political journey with the Jana Sangh and has remained a key figure in the BJP throughout his career.
