A devastating earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan late on Monday night, resulting in a significant loss of life and widespread injuries. The earthquake has claimed the lives of at least 622 people and injured over 1,300. The quake hit while many residents were asleep, causing widespread damage and fear. The US Geological Survey indicated the quake’s epicenter was approximately 27 kilometers northeast of Jalalabad. Several aftershocks followed the initial tremor. The provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar saw the collapse of numerous mud and stone homes, especially in remote villages. The majority of the fatalities have been reported in Kunar province. Local officials reported a significant number of casualties and injuries, with rescue teams facing difficulties reaching remote areas. The tremors were felt throughout several districts, causing buildings to sway and forcing residents to flee their homes. The impact of the quake was also felt in Islamabad, Pakistan. The relatively shallow depth of the earthquake amplified its destructive power. The region is known for its vulnerable infrastructure and the vulnerability of its construction. Rescue teams are actively searching for those trapped in the rubble. Eastern Afghanistan, situated in a seismically active zone, is susceptible to earthquakes. This area, located where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, faces the challenge of weak housing and difficult access to emergency aid. The ongoing conflict and economic instability compound the challenges. Relief efforts are underway, but officials say assessing the complete scope of the disaster will take time.
