The visit of Ali Larijani, a high-ranking Iranian official, to Beirut sparked interest due to his close ties with Supreme Leader Khamenei. Larijani met with Hezbollah and Lebanese leaders, including President Joseph Aoun, where the complexities of the Iran-Lebanon relationship were evident.

Iran’s influence in Lebanon, largely exerted through Hezbollah, has faced both acceptance and resistance. President Aoun, while acknowledging a desire for cooperation with Iran, emphasized the importance of sovereignty and respect. He also voiced his disagreement with some recent pronouncements by Iranian officials.

Aoun made it clear that Lebanon wants a relationship with Iran that includes all Lebanese citizens, irrespective of their affiliations. He emphasized Lebanon’s role as a common home for all its people and the responsibility of the state to protect all communities.

He strongly rejected any external interference in Lebanon’s affairs and insisted on the need for a secure and stable environment for all citizens.

Aoun cautioned against the consequences of internal divisions fueled by external support, stating that no faction should resort to weapons or depend on external powers.

He highlighted that the Lebanese military is responsible for the security of all Lebanese citizens. Any threat, from any source, should be seen as a challenge for the entire nation, with unity being the most potent response.

Larijani conveyed greetings from the Iranian President and invited President Aoun to Tehran. He also expressed Iran’s interest in supporting Lebanon’s reconstruction and strengthening ties across all sectors. He recognized President Aoun’s role in promoting national unity and harmony.
