Delhi-Meerut Expressway Lane Closure for Kanwar Yatra: Heavy Vehicle Ban Implemented

To facilitate the Kanwar Yatra, the Ghaziabad Traffic Police will close the Meerut-to-Delhi lane of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway from 10 PM on Saturday. This lane will be reserved for Kanwariyas returning from Uttarakhand. Additionally, a ban on heavy vehicles will be in place. Light vehicles, including cars and two-wheelers, will be permitted to travel from Delhi to Meerut. These restrictions are expected to continue until the end of the Kanwar Yatra, potentially lasting until July 23 or 24. The decision is based on the expectation of numerous postal Kanwariyas in Ghaziabad. Vehicles from Meerut will be diverted to National Highway-9 (NH-9). The restrictions on heavy vehicles, previously imposed on July 11 on the three major Kanwar routes, will remain. The Kanwar Yatra route in Ghaziabad extends 25 km from Muradnagar to Tila Mor and 42.5 km from the Kadarabad border to the Delhi-Ghaziabad border, with an alternate route of about 53 km on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway and National Highway-9 also being included. Heavy vehicles can enter NH-9 only from UP Gate and must utilize the Eastern Peripheral Expressway. The traffic restrictions on the Delhi-Meerut Road will remain the same. The route from Meerut to Ghaziabad will be exclusively for Kanwariyas, while the Ghaziabad to Meerut route will be open for all traffic. The traffic police have identified 12 locations where high traffic pressure is anticipated. Traffic will be temporarily stopped at these locations to ensure the safe passage of Kanwariyas. Traffic flow will resume as normal once the Kanwariyas have passed.
