Former President Donald Trump has confirmed he will visit China in April 2026, accepting an invitation from President Xi Jinping. Trump revealed this on Truth Social following a “very good” phone call with Xi. The wide-ranging discussion encompassed pressing issues such as the war in Ukraine, Russia, the illicit fentanyl trade, and trade in agricultural products, including soybeans. Trump specifically mentioned a successful “good and very important deal” benefiting American farmers, with expectations of further improvements.

This planned trip to Beijing mirrors President Xi’s reciprocal invitation for a U.S. state visit by Trump in 2026, signaling a continued focus on high-level diplomatic engagement. Trump characterized the U.S.-China relationship as “extremely strong.” The leaders also addressed the conflict in Ukraine, with President Xi reaffirming China’s support for peace and resolution efforts.

In a separate but related development, Trump also spoke with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, initiating the call to brief her on his conversation with President Xi. This diplomatic exchange follows recent trade disputes between China and Japan, which were precipitated by Takaichi’s comments on a potential Taiwan contingency. China’s Foreign Ministry indicated that Trump had communicated to Xi his understanding of the importance of the Taiwan issue. Following the call, President Xi emphasized the need for continued progress in China-U.S. ties, built upon the foundations of equality, respect, and mutual benefit.
