DMK Accuses Uttar Pradesh of Being Behind on Women’s Rights

The DMK has criticized Uttar Pradesh for its slow progress on women’s property rights, specifically regarding the consideration of a law granting married daughters equal rights to their fathers’ agricultural land. The DMK pointed out that Tamil Nadu enacted such a law in 1989. The party’s mouthpiece, ‘Murasoli,’ noted that Uttar Pradesh is only now following suit, 35 years after Karunanidhi amended the Hindu Succession Act in Tamil Nadu. The editorial recalled Periyar E.V. Ramasamy’s early calls for women’s rights, dating back nearly a century. The DMK emphasized Uttar Pradesh’s perceived backwardness, citing a Tamil newspaper report on Uttar Pradesh’s revenue code and the long-standing demand for amendments. The DMK urged the Uttar Pradesh government to support women’s rights, acknowledging the potential for resistance.
