Raipur, December 24, 2024/ The Heart, Chest, and Vascular Surgery department of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Smriti Chikitsalay achieved a major feat by removing a nearly five-kilogram mediastinal tumor attached to the lungs and heart of a 52-year-old woman. The surgery was significant because if the surgeon’s team had not carefully removed this cancerous tumor, there could have been a risk of injury to the vital organs, the heart and lungs. Thanks to the skilled surgical team at Ambedkar Hospital, the patient recovered and was discharged from the hospital after this complex surgery. The Health Minister, Shri Shyam Bihari Jaiswal, congratulated the Ambedkar Hospital administration on successfully completing this difficult surgery. He stated that open-heart surgery and coronary bypass surgery facilities will soon be available to the public.

A 52-year-old woman arrived at Ambedkar Hospital complaining of difficulty in breathing. A CT scan and other tests revealed a large tumor inside her chest, attached to her heart. The patient’s condition was so critical that she could barely breathe, so she was placed on a high-pressure (BiPAP) ventilator. The tumor was so large that it had shifted the heart and compressed the lungs and trachea. Other institutions had refused to operate on the patient. As planned, the tumor was successfully removed through the combined efforts of cancer surgeon Dr. Ashutosh Gupta and the heart and chest surgeon Dr. Krishnakant Sahu’s team. During this operation, a heart-lung machine was kept ready in standby mode, as support would be available from the machine if any injury occurred to the heart or pulmonary artery.

The tumor weighed approximately five kilograms. A biopsy later revealed it to be a malignant tumor called sarcoma, a very dangerous type of tumor. After recovery, the patient was sent to the oncology department for chemotherapy.
