Don’t politicise sports activities: Russia proposes internet hosting first SCO video games in 2024

By Geeta Mohan: Amid sanctions and boycotts from the worldwide neighborhood, Russia’s sports activities minister Oleg Matytsin proposed that the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) begin a world sporting occasion for SCO member states and that Russia would need to host the primary video games in 2024.

Speaking to reporters in Delhi, the Russian Sports Minister mentioned, “We discussed with my colleagues from SCO countries the possibility to organise the first games and we proposed Russia as the host country to organise these games, but we need to follow their regulations and we will ask Kazakhstan who will chair the meeting next year. If all the ministers agree, since consensus is the basis, Russia will be ready to host the games.”

“We proposed it yesterday (Wednesday). It needs time to have consultations with representatives of each country. From the Russian side, we are ready to prepare the concept of the games – dates and other technical aspects. We proposed it for next year to be realistic, but we are ready this year as well,” the minister added.

The assembly introduced collectively officers from sports activities ministries and businesses from Russia, India, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

The transfer comes weeks after president Thomas Bach mentioned the IOC stood in solidarity with Ukraine’s athletes, but in addition that sports activities has to respect the human rights of all athletes.

The Russian Sports Minister emphasised the necessity to “depoliticise” sports activities. “Politics should be out of sports… I urge the international community not to destroy the sports world and not to influence international sports federations and international boards like the IOC, sending a message of boycott of Russian participation. He mentioned, “Doping is unacceptable. We have a government and non-governmental system to prevent doping. In Russia, we did make some mistakes. But today we have a very strong anti-doping system in the world and it is recognised by WADA and by UNESCO. We have to have strong barriers and legal regulations to prevent doping, not only legal but also educational. How to compete without doping? Drugs not only cause physical problems but also spoil the culture of sports.”

To a query on widening the ambit of such sporting occasions to different multilateral codecs such because the G20, Oleg Matytsin mentioned, “We have some regular competitions, projects. SCO Games is one more project. Also, for the G20, let’s create one more project. To bring Olympians, Para-Olympians, students together. We need to give our athletes one more opportunity to play. It is not just because of sanctions, we just want them to play more.”

Adding, “Russia is strong and big. We do not need to create ambitions, we just need to open the doors. The possibility for people to come and live in peace. We are not going to create an alternative competition, an alternative project. We just want to give one more chance for people to come – SCO, G20 – it doesn’t matter.”
