The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is looking into the matter of telecom operators discontinuing entry-level 1GB mobile data plans. The DoT has raised concerns regarding the decision by two of the largest telecom operators to stop offering their most affordable data plans and subsequently raise prices. The DoT has instructed TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) to investigate and provide a report.

Telecom operators explained the discontinuation of the 1GB data plans was based on an analysis of user behavior. One provider stated it removed its plan according to market conditions, and clarified that some discontinued packs are still available through offline stores. Another provider also removed its ₹249 plan, explaining that the decision aimed to improve customer value, based on market dynamics. Here are some value-driven recharge plans:

Jio’s ₹1,799 plan offers 84 days of validity and includes 3GB of daily data. All plans with 2GB data or more daily include unlimited 5G data. The plan also offers 100 SMS per day, unlimited calls, and a Netflix Basic subscription, along with access to JioTV. As part of special offers celebrating Jio’s 9th anniversary, users also receive a 2-month trial of Jio Home and an extra 2% on Jio Gold.

Vodafone Idea’s ₹1,749 plan offers users 1.5GB of daily data, plus 30GB of extra data valid for 45 days. This effectively provides more data than the daily cap. This plan offers 100 SMS per day, and 100 days more validity than Jio’s plan. Users also benefit from the ‘Binge All Night’ feature and weekend data rollover. However, Vi’s plans do not include OTT subscriptions, unlike Jio’s offer.
