West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has pushed back against media interpretations of her remarks on the Durgapur gang rape case, stating her comments were distorted. Banerjee criticized news outlets for twisting her statements and urged them to avoid politicizing the tragedy. “You ask me a question, I answer it, and then you distort it. Do not try this kind of politics…” she declared, according to ANI. The Chief Minister had previously expressed deep shock over the incident and vowed to bring the culprits to justice. Her earlier statement, where she questioned the student’s presence outside at 12:30 AM and suggested that female students should not be permitted to leave college dormitories at night, had sparked debate. Banerjee stressed that both private medical colleges and students themselves have a responsibility to ensure safety, especially in the vicinity of wooded areas. The alleged gang rape of a second-year medical student has prompted widespread outrage and calls for immediate justice.
