A critical health concern has emerged in the West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand, where a staggering percentage of children are experiencing stunted growth, also known as dwarfism. Approximately 60% of children under the age of five in this district are affected, placing West Singhbhum second in India for the prevalence of this condition. This information was brought to light in a report submitted to Parliament by the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development.
The report indicated that across India, 63 districts are grappling with stunting rates that exceed 50%. Maharashtra’s Nandurbar district has the highest rate, followed by West Singhbhum, and then Chitrakoot in Uttar Pradesh. This data was shared in response to queries raised in Parliament. The data shows the importance of nutritional support and healthcare resources. Experts believe malnutrition, poor healthcare, and socioeconomic inequality contribute to this issue. Addressing these problems is essential to improve the health of children in the area. The state of Uttar Pradesh has many districts facing high rates of stunting among children.
