In a move towards greener transport, a new retrofit system has been developed to convert existing diesel engines to run on 90% hydrogen. This technology, developed by UNSW researchers, aligns with India’s environmental goals, promising a significant reduction in emissions and an efficiency gain of up to 26%. The system replaces the diesel injection system with a hydrogen-specific system, offering independent control of fuel injection timing. This design also allows for the efficient use of low-quality hydrogen. The innovative stratified hydrogen injection technique reduces nitrous oxide emissions, making it an environmentally friendly choice. With the government’s focus on establishing hydrogen infrastructure, these retrofit kits could become commonplace. Other companies, like HYDI, are also developing retrofit solutions, with a focus on generating hydrogen on demand, potentially reducing fuel consumption by a notable margin.
