The Election Commission (EC) is enhancing its online voter ID services with a new feature. This initiative requires verification via a mobile number linked to the Aadhaar card for all actions related to voter lists, including adding new names, making corrections, or removing names. The EC has launched an e-sign feature on its ECINet portal and app, following concerns raised after issues in Karnataka’s Aland assembly constituency. The e-sign system utilizes the Indian government’s unique identification system, enabling users to digitally sign documents using their Aadhaar number. The introduction of this feature is designed to secure and streamline the deletion or correction of voter IDs.
The addition of the e-sign feature is intended to prevent misuse of voter lists. Previously, mobile numbers could be linked to Voter ID numbers (EPIC) to submit forms, which sometimes resulted in incorrect information. Now, applicants must input their Aadhaar number, receive an OTP on their linked mobile number, and confirm their consent before submitting the form. After the e-sign process is completed, applicants are redirected to the ECINet portal for form submission. This new process will apply to Form 6 (new registration), Form 7 (deletion/objection), and Form 8 (correction).
The changes were implemented due to irregularities uncovered in the Aland assembly constituency of Karnataka, where thousands of questionable voter deletion requests were identified. An investigation revealed that a vast majority of these requests were invalid, and the mobile numbers used for OTP verification were not those of actual voters. The EC responded to these findings by enhancing security and verification protocols, leading to the development of this new system.
The EC also emphasized that no direct online voter deletion will be permitted. The process mandates physical verification by the involved Booth Level Officer (BLO) and Electoral Registration Officer (ERO). Each voter retains the right to present their case.
ECINet, which was launched this year, consolidates roughly 40 older apps and portals, including ERONet. The platform supports online applications from voters and facilitates efficient action by officials. The e-sign feature has been integrated to enhance transparency and security within the system.
