England showcased a commanding performance in the third ODI, securing a historic 342-run victory over South Africa, the largest winning margin in ODI history when batting first. South Africa’s batting struggled, being bowled out for a mere 72 runs in 20.5 overs while chasing England’s score of 415 in Southampton, barely avoiding their lowest ODI score.

Jofra Archer’s exceptional bowling and Jacob Bethell’s maiden century were instrumental in England’s success. Archer dominated South Africa’s top order, taking 4 wickets for 18 runs in nine overs, and Bethell displayed his batting skills with a score of 110 off 82 balls, which included 13 boundaries and 3 sixes.

This victory surpassed India’s previous record and was a significant improvement on England’s previous best from 2018. England, batting first, posted a formidable 414 for 5, marking their fifth-highest ODI score. Joe Root’s century, along with strong contributions from Jos Buttler (62*), Jamie Smith (62), and Bethell, fueled the innings. Bethell’s performance at No. 4 was particularly impressive, building on his earlier performance at Lord’s.

The South African innings quickly faltered, with Archer’s pace and bounce creating havoc, leading to a score of 18 for 5. Adil Rashid’s three wickets closed out the match. Despite losing the first two games, England salvaged the series in impressive style. This win highlighted England’s strength and sets the stage for their preparations for the Ashes later in the year, while also providing a milestone for Bethell, who will captain the side against Ireland.
