In a move highlighting enhanced border preparedness, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has announced extensive drills across its northeastern operational theater. Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) have been disseminated, informing civilian aviation of temporary airspace restrictions crucial for large-scale IAF exercises scheduled between November and January. These exercises will occur in close proximity to India’s borders with China, Bhutan, Myanmar, and Bangladesh.

The planned NOTAM periods are strategically spaced, with initial activations on November 6 and 20, followed by subsequent periods on December 4 and 18. The training regimen will extend into the new year with further exercises on January 1 and 15. The drills are comprehensive, involving advanced combat training scenarios, coordinated air operations, and the testing of logistical capabilities from numerous forward air bases. The northeastern sector, sharing boundaries with four nations, is a key area for maintaining national security and demonstrating air superiority.

The purpose of issuing a NOTAM is to create a safe zone for military aircraft by temporarily grounding civilian flights. This ensures that air force jets, drones, and other military assets can execute their training and operational missions without any risk of mid-air conflicts. This procedure is a standard international practice during periods of significant military activity, emphasizing safety and operational efficiency. The ongoing exercises in the Northeast are a testament to the IAF’s commitment to readiness and its strategic focus on safeguarding India’s sensitive eastern borders.
