20-Foot Veena Sand Art Pays Tribute to Asha Bhosle
1 min readRenowned for his beachside masterpieces, Sudarshan Pattnaik channeled grief into creativity with a 20-foot sand veena on Odisha’s Puri Beach, dedicated to the immortal Asha Bhosle. The Sunday unveiling featured complex carvings that evoke her timeless contributions to Indian music.
A heartfelt note on the sculpture declares, ‘Tribute to Asha Tai – Your voice will live forever in our hearts.’ With input from his Sand Art Institute trainees, the piece masterfully blends artistry and emotion, honoring Bhosle’s grace and vocal versatility.
From the 1950s onward, Bhosle dominated playback singing, delivering hits in Hindi, Marathi, and more, often alongside sister Lata Mangeshkar. Her innovative style influenced global music scenes and earned her a place in Guinness records.
‘We were raised on her melodies,’ Pattnaik remarked, voicing the pain of millions. Odisha’s Chief Minister echoed this, posting a moving tribute on Facebook, hailing her as a generational icon and seeking blessings from Lord Jagannath for her peace.
The artwork’s intricate designs – flowing strings and ornate body – mirror Bhosle’s life: resilient, melodic, and profound. Tourists and locals gathered, sharing stories of songs like ‘Aaiye Meharbaan’ that defined romances and celebrations.
This ephemeral yet powerful tribute highlights Pattnaik’s skill in transforming sand into monuments of memory. As tides approach, it reinforces Bhosle’s message: music transcends time, binding hearts across generations in shared nostalgia.
