From Doctor’s Son to ‘Babuji’: Alok Nath’s Journey Through Bollywood

Alok Nath, the actor forever associated with the caring and principled father figure, began his life on a very different path. He was born on 10 July 1956 in Delhi to a doctor father and a homemaker mother who envisioned a medical career for their only son. After completing his school education in the capital, Alok’s passion for performance surfaced during his college days, leading him to join the Ruchika Theatre Group.

Eager to sharpen his theatrical skills, he enrolled at the National School of Drama, where he spent three intensive years mastering acting techniques. In 1980, while still a student, he caught the attention of Dolly Thakur, the casting director for the biopic "Gandhi," who was scouting fresh faces at NSD. Alok earned a role in the film and was paid roughly 20,000 rupees – a modest sum that kick‑started his film career.

His relocation to Mumbai did not guarantee instant success. The actor faced a five‑year lull before landing his next on‑screen appearance, supplementing his livelihood through stage work. A brief cameo in the 1984 film "Mashaal" eventually led to a series of supporting roles.

The turning point arrived with "Kayamath Se Kayamath Tak" in 1988, after which Alok became a go‑to choice for fatherly and elder characters. Over the next three decades he featured in about 140 movies and more than 15 TV serials, embodying the archetype of the dutiful, moral father in blockbusters such as "Maine Pyaar Kiya," "Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!" and "Vivah."

Despite receiving offers to portray a modern, unconventional father in newer projects, Alok chose to preserve his timeless image, reinforcing the bond with audiences who continue to see him as the quintessential “Babuji.”
