The debut film ‘Songs of Forgotten Trees’ directed by Anuparna Roy has won the Orizzonti Award for Best Director at the 82nd Venice Film Festival. The award was presented by fellow director Anurag Kashyap. Roy expressed her feelings about the win. She hopes that the film touches the hearts of women across the world. She dedicated the award to every woman who has been silenced, overlooked or underestimated. Producer Bibhanshu Rai spoke about the challenges faced while making the film. He mentioned how they overcame the tough days and moments of doubt. Producer Romil Modi mentioned that supporting women filmmakers is essential. Their stories show strength and honesty, and are far more compelling than what is usually seen. Ranjan Singh, representing Flip Films, mentioned how Roy’s initial pitch for a human drama helped produce the film. ‘Songs of Forgotten Trees’ was the only Indian film in the Orizzonti section this year, and it won over the jury and the audience. The film’s producers are Bibhanshu Rai, Romil Modi, and Ranjan Singh. The film stars Naaz Shaikh and Sumi Baghel, and explores the lives of two women connecting in Mumbai. The synopsis highlights Thooya, an aspiring actress, and Swetha, who works in a corporate setting. The two women, who come from different backgrounds, find unexpected intimacy within the city.
