The Indian film music fraternity lost one of its most beloved composers when Ram Laxman breathed his last on May 22, 2021. Born Vijay Kashinath Patil in 1942, he rose to fame through his enchanting scores for Rajshree Productions films that celebrated love and family values. His death at 79 years old marked the end of an era that produced some of Bollywood’s most cherished romantic melodies.

Ram Laxman entered Hindi cinema with Agent Vinod in 1977 after gaining experience in Marathi films under Dada Kondke. When his musical partner died young, he carried on alone under the Ram Laxman name and delivered his biggest success with Maine Pyar Kiya in 1989. Tracks such as Kabootar Ja Ja Ja and Aaja Shaam Hone Aayi became wedding staples and cultural phenomena that defined youthful romance for an entire generation.

The 1994 family drama Hum Aapke Hain Koun brought further acclaim with songs like Didi Tera Devar Deewana and Hum Aapke Hain Koun. Over his career spanning more than 150 films, Ram Laxman collaborated with vocal greats like Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle. He avoided publicity, focusing instead on creating music that spoke directly to the hearts of listeners. His passing left a profound void in the world of Indian film music.
