The Supreme Court has ordered comedian and YouTuber Samay Raina to issue an unconditional apology for making insensitive remarks about people with disabilities. This ruling comes after a complaint lodged by Cure SMA, a group dedicated to helping patients with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Raina, along with Vipul Goyal, Balraj Paramjeet Singh Ghai, Nishant Jagdish Tanwar, and Sonali Thakkar aka Sonali Aditya Desai, must apologize on their YouTube channels and any other relevant platforms. The court also instructed the Indian government to create social media guidelines to moderate jokes and ensure respectful conduct towards disabled citizens. During the hearing, Justice Surya Kant emphasized the need for a balance between rights and responsibilities, stating that such behavior could set a precedent for other vulnerable groups. Previously, the court had condemned the comedians’ actions, stating that they were misusing the fundamental right to freedom of speech. The court ordered Samay Raina and other influencers to apologize for the jokes they made.
