Following discussions between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, the European Union has publicly affirmed its continued backing of Ukraine and its refusal to accept alterations to Ukrainian borders. Key EU leaders, including von der Leyen, Macron, Meloni, Merz, Starmer, Stubb, Tusk, and Costa, issued a joint statement outlining their position. The statement confirmed that President Trump had shared details of his meeting with President Putin with both European leaders and President Zelensky on August 15th. The statement applauded Trump’s aims to halt the conflict, end the hostilities initiated by Russia, and create a peaceful and sustainable resolution. Echoing Trump’s stance, the statement reiterated that an agreement must be reached before any deal can be finalized. The EU is prepared to collaborate with Trump and Zelensky on a trilateral summit. The statement emphasized that Ukraine needs robust security guarantees to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and welcomed the US’s commitment to provide such guarantees. It further stated that Ukraine’s military and its partnerships with other countries should not be restricted, and that Russia should not have the power to veto Ukraine’s integration with the EU and NATO. The statement reiterated that Ukraine should be the sole decision-maker regarding its territory, and that any changes to international borders by force are unacceptable. The EU vowed to sustain its assistance to Ukraine, including efforts to stabilize the nation and achieve a long-term peaceful settlement. The EU is also prepared to maintain pressure on Russia, including sanctions and economic measures, until a just and lasting peace is established. The EU assured that Ukraine can rely on its firm solidarity as they strive towards a peace that safeguards Ukraine’s and Europe’s fundamental security concerns.
