HARIDWAR: Makar Sankranti dawned with a spectacle of devotion at Har Ki Pauri, where relentless cold failed to dampen the enthusiasm of pilgrims converging for the holy dip. The ghat reverberated with bhajans as men, women, and children took the plunge into the Ganga, embracing the festival’s promise of renewal.

Rooted in solar worship, this harvest festival signals longer days and agricultural abundance. In the sacred city of Haridwar, it amplifies into a major Snan event, drawing sadhus from remote ashrams and families on spiritual quests.

Organizers reported over 50,000 participants on day one, with numbers swelling progressively. Rescue teams with life jackets patrolled the waters, while shamianas provided shelter from the fog-shrouded morning. A poignant moment unfolded when an elderly saint led a group recitation of Sankranti mantras, moving the crowd to tears.

Beyond the rituals, the occasion fostered cultural exchanges – tilkut and rewari stalls lined the streets, and kite battles ensued on nearby rooftops. District Magistrate emphasized eco-friendly practices, promoting biodegradable offerings.

With the Snan season extending, Haridwar prepares for peak influx. This Makar Sankranti reaffirms why Har Ki Pauri remains India’s premier pilgrimage site, where spirituality conquers the elements.
