The smartphone industry is witnessing significant developments. According to reports, Samsung Display’s President, Lee Cheong, has confirmed the commencement of large-scale production of OLED panels for a foldable phone, intended for an American firm. Although the firm wasn’t named, market speculation points towards Apple as the beneficiary. Samsung Display’s President, Lee Cheong, recently disclosed that the company is set to begin mass production of OLED panels specifically designed for foldable phones. Although the brand that will use these panels wasn’t revealed, there is significant discussion in the tech industry indicating this production is intended for Apple, potentially signaling a strengthened partnership between the two tech giants. Based on available leaks, the forthcoming foldable iPhone from Apple might feature a 5.5-inch cover display and a 7.8-inch internal folding screen. This device could potentially integrate a side-mounted Touch ID sensor instead of Face ID, representing a departure from Apple’s conventional iPhone designs, embracing a more futuristic aesthetic. It’s also been hinted that the Apple foldable phone could mimic the design of the recently released iPhone Air, essentially doubling the display. Tech analysts estimate that Apple may launch its foldable iPhone in September 2026, coinciding with the iPhone 18 series. However, the exact launch timeline is subject to change. Apple is known for surprising releases, so the date is still speculative. Tech reporter Mark Gurman, in his “Power On” newsletter, noted that Apple’s first foldable phone will be exceptionally slim and incorporate advanced folding technology. He also said that the device will be produced by Foxconn in China, indicating Apple is serious about its inaugural foldable device. Samsung’s Galaxy Z series currently dominates the foldable smartphone sector. Apple’s first foldable iPhone will directly challenge the Galaxy Z series. However, with already popular foldable phones on the market, Apple will face tough competition. Therefore, Apple needs to distinguish its new foldable iPhone.
