Shubman Gill’s appointment as India’s new ODI captain for the series against Australia marks a pivotal moment, as it signifies the end of an era. It has been approximately nine years since Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli last featured in an international match for India under the leadership of another player. This specific instance took place on the eve of Diwali in 2016.

In that ODI against New Zealand in Visakhapatnam, MS Dhoni was the captain. Virat Kohli was still cementing his captaincy, and Rohit Sharma was a prominent player considered for future leadership. The match itself was a commanding victory for India, who bowled out the Kiwis for just 79 while chasing 270. Rohit Sharma was instrumental with a 65-ball 70 as an opener, and Virat Kohli contributed 65 runs at the number three position. From that day onwards, any international match featuring both Rohit and Kohli had one of them leading the Indian squad across formats.

The return of Rohit and Kohli to the ODI squad for the upcoming series against Australia is their first since the Champions Trophy success. While Gill takes charge as captain, the invaluable experience of these senior players will be a significant asset. Their future in ODIs, potentially extending to the 2027 World Cup, is a key talking point, but their final appearances in the format will undoubtedly be a highlight. Gill, recognizing the narrative surrounding the seniors’ comeback, intends to lead by example through his performance, setting the stage for India’s preparation for the World Cup.
