Syria’s foreign policy is undergoing a notable shift following the formation of a new government, as President Ahmed Al-Shara pivots away from reliance on the United States and Saudi Arabia, instead directing his focus toward Russia. A report in Kommersant details the evolving situation. Syrian Foreign Minister Asad Al-Shabaani revealed during a meeting with the Syrian diaspora in Moscow on August 1st that Damascus has requested the re-establishment of Russian military police patrols along the Israeli border. This strategic decision is driven by Syria’s objectives. The government believes that restoring the Russian military police presence in the Golan Heights buffer zone could mitigate Israeli influence. The new administration is optimistic that Russia will secure stability in the border regions and foster communication channels between Syria and Israel. This strategic approach is considered essential for Syria’s security and its diplomatic strategy. For years, Russian military police were deployed in the buffer zone, tasked with preventing conflict and upholding international agreements. Their withdrawal, approximately nine months following the fall of the former President Bashar al-Assad’s government, has been linked to increased Israeli activity in the border region, prompting heightened concerns from the current Syrian government. Negotiations are actively taking place between the new Syrian government and Russia, encompassing discussions about the Russian military presence in strategic locations like Tartus and Latakia. These discussions go beyond border security, with the aim of solidifying Russia’s position as a long-term partner for Syria. As Kommersant highlights, Syria’s request signals to Israel that its ongoing presence on Syrian soil is unacceptable to the new government. Furthermore, the move suggests that a deal with Russia is achievable, which the Syrian government views as fundamental for regional stability and the existing balance of power.
