The sub-4 meter SUV market is highly contested, and the next few years will see a surge of new vehicle launches. These upcoming vehicles will encompass both electric vehicles (EVs) and those utilizing internal combustion engines (ICE). Several models are already undergoing testing phases, while some have been previewed to generate excitement.
The second-generation Hyundai Venue, with a targeted launch of October 2025, is currently undergoing test runs in India. This model will replace the existing Venue, which has been on sale since 2019 and received a facelift in 2022. Spy shots suggest a larger infotainment display that mirrors the layout seen in the Hyundai Creta. The engine options are anticipated to remain consistent, though there will likely be a price increase compared to the current range.
The Kia Syros EV is in development and has been spotted during testing in Korea. It appears to share many characteristics with its ICE counterpart. Built on a reinforced K1 platform, its interior layout may be similar, but it will incorporate battery packs from the Hyundai Inster. Two battery pack options are anticipated: a 42 kWh pack and a 49 kWh Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) pack, offering estimated ranges of around 300 km and 355 km, respectively. Pricing could be in the ₹14–20 lakh range.
The Hyundai Bayon crossover is another anticipated vehicle, designed to fill the gap between the Exter and the Venue in Hyundai’s lineup. Constructed on the i20 platform, it will likely share its engine lineup with the i20 hatchback. Reports suggest that the 1.2-liter petrol engine may receive a mild-hybrid technology upgrade, improving both efficiency and performance. The Hyundai Bayon is planned for release within the next year.
Tata is planning a near-future launch of the all-new Tata Nexon. The SUV, codenamed Garud, utilizes the X1 architecture. This vehicle is slated for a 2027 launch, incorporating fresh design updates akin to other current Tata SUVs. It will be available with petrol and CNG trims. The presence of existing 1.5L engines or the inclusion of new hybrid technology remains uncertain. If diesel engines are utilized, they will be updated to conform with BS7 emission norms.
While manufacturers have expressed their intent to launch these models within the next year, some releases may experience delays due to various factors, including shortages of rare-earth metals and supply chain issues.
While Toyota has not disclosed details on the potential launch of a next-generation Toyota Fortuner, market anticipation indicates its likely arrival. The new Fortuner might incorporate features such as a head-up display, ADAS technology, and ventilated seats. Its styling accents will likely be similar to those of the current-generation Hilux and other international market vehicles.
