Ajinkya Rahane is calling for a modernization of the domestic cricket selection panel, suggesting that recently retired cricketers are the most appropriate candidates. Rahane pointed out the game’s dynamic evolution, arguing that selectors need to possess a modern outlook to accurately assess current players. The current five-year retirement rule for selectors might not always align with the fast-changing nature of cricket.

During a recent online chat, Rahane explained that selectors who have recently exited the professional circuit bring a crucial contemporary perspective. He highlighted how formats like T20 and leagues like the IPL have reshaped player strategies and mindsets, making the game vastly different from what it was decades ago. Rahane’s vision is for selectors to be approachable figures who encourage fearless cricket, rather than entities that intimidate players. This contemporary understanding, he feels, is vital for making selections that truly reflect the modern game.

Rahane also firmly advocated for domestic cricket to be the cornerstone of national team selections, especially for Test matches. He believes that players who perform exceptionally well in domestic competitions are the ones who should be considered for the Indian team. Rahane sees this as a system that rewards merit and recognizes the unique challenge and value of representing India in Test cricket, stemming directly from strong domestic performances.
