Shubman Gill, captain of the Indian Test team, has finally addressed the lingering questions about veteran pacer Mohammed Shami’s absence from the squad. Gill recognized Shami’s outstanding quality but also indicated that the team’s focus is shifting towards its current pace unit, which includes rising stars Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna. In a press conference held before the next Test match, Gill admitted that deciding to omit Shami, given his vast experience and proven skill, was a significant challenge. He highlighted the impactful performances delivered by other bowlers who have risen to the occasion in Shami’s stead.

“It becomes a tough call when you look at the performances of other guys like Akash Deep and Prasidh and also what Siraj and Bumrah have done for us, alongside Shami bhai’s quality,” Gill commented. He elaborated, “It’s never easy when someone like Shami bhai has to miss out, but at the same time, we have to plan ahead.” Gill also suggested that the selectors are the primary authority for detailed explanations on fitness and selection matters. Mohammed Shami has been sidelined from Test cricket following the 2023 WTC final due to ongoing fitness issues. His most recent international engagement was in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, and he was also not selected for the limited-overs series against Australia. A high-ranking BCCI official revealed that Shami was asked to participate in an India A game but declined, stating he was still working on increasing his bowling workload. The board is reportedly privy to medical reports suggesting potential limitations in Shami’s ability to bowl extended spells. Despite his absence from the national side, Shami has showcased remarkable form in the Ranji Trophy 2025-26, claiming 15 wickets in three appearances, reinforcing his status as a potent force.
