Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate two significant road projects in Haryana on August 17th, offering a much-needed respite for commuters in Delhi and the NCR region. These projects include the Dwarka Expressway and the Urban Extension Road-2 (UER-2), and are poised to dramatically improve transport infrastructure and ease traffic woes.
The combined cost of these projects is approximately ₹11,000 crore, and they have been designed to reduce congestion in Delhi-NCR and Gurugram, easing the movement of goods. The Dwarka Expressway is a key component, India’s first 8-lane urban elevated expressway, offering a direct route from Gurugram to the Delhi Airport. This will significantly reduce the commute time for Delhi residents.
With the Dwarka Expressway, the journey from Gurugram to the airport will take approximately 20 minutes, a vast improvement compared to the hour-long journeys frequently plagued by congestion. The expressway features a 3.6 km tunnel, the widest in India.
The Dwarka Expressway will primarily benefit the residents of Gurugram, Dwarka, Vasant Kunj and the surrounding areas. It will also facilitate quicker commutes for those traveling to and from Faridabad, Manesar, Sonipat, Panipat, and Chandigarh. This project aims to reduce traffic by 50 percent on the Gurugram road originating from Dhaula Kuan.
The 29-kilometer urban elevated Dwarka Expressway spans 18.9 km in Haryana and 10.1 km in Delhi, originating at Shiv Murti in Mahipalpur, Delhi, and terminating at the Kherki Daula toll plaza in Gurugram.
Residents of outer and rural areas like Bawana, Narela, Mundka, Rohini, Samaypur Badli, Kanjhawala, and Kirari will see significant improvements in travel times. Moreover, access to DDA flats in Narela and Bawana will be simplified.
The Urban Extension Road-2 (UER-2) will also be inaugurated, spanning 75.81 km. This road features several elevated sections, engineered to alleviate traffic congestion in Delhi, Gurugram, Sonipat, and surrounding areas. Expected benefits include reduced traffic at Mundka, Bakkarwala, Najafgarh, Dhaula Kuan, and Mubaraka Chowk.
UER-2 will begin at the Delhi-Chandigarh highway in Alipur, Delhi, and will pass through Mundka, Bakkarwala, Najafgarh, and Dwarka, connecting to the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway near Mahipalpur. It has been designed as Delhi’s third ring road and is estimated to cost ₹6,445 crore.
UER-II will link to the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway near the Akshardham Temple, benefiting those traveling to Dehradun from Haryana and Rajasthan. It will also shorten travel times for commuters from Noida to the IGI Airport and reduce congestion on Delhi’s Ring Road, NH-48, NH-44, and the Barapulla Elevated Corridor.
The Dwarka Expressway’s Delhi section will improve local transport and integrate rail, metro, and bus services through multi-modal connectivity. UER-II will be instrumental in reducing traffic in Delhi’s congested areas, helping people to meet flight and train schedules and minimizing the stress associated with traffic delays.
