DR Congo Ebola Outbreak Accelerates, Case Fatality Hits 32%

Ebola activity in the eastern DRC is on an upward trajectory, according to the latest WHO briefing. The region’s hot‑spot health zones—Ituri and North Kivu—are experiencing sustained transmission, with new clusters appearing in previously unaffected zones. Of the 430 confirmed Ebola deaths investigated up to 5 July, 397 (92.3 %) occurred either in the community or before patients could reach a treatment centre. This stark figure underscores the gaps in early detection and rapid referral. While contact tracing has improved, the coverage remains insufficient: out of 12,412 contacts under observation, only 32.4 % of the total confirmed cases were identified through this process. The situation places an enormous strain on treatment capacity; more than 22 Ebola Treatment Centres operate across the country, offering roughly 700 isolation beds. By early July, 646 patients were isolated, pushing occupancy to about 94.2 %.
