Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan marked a new era in Kerala’s medical infrastructure by laying the cornerstone for the state’s pioneering organ transplant institute in Kozhikode’s Chevayur area. This comprehensive center will streamline transplants of all kinds, making life-saving procedures more accessible and efficient.
Annual projections include 1,100 corneas, 520 kidneys, 320 livers, 15 intestines, 50 hearts, 40 lungs, and specialized ones like face and hand reconstructions. Vijayan stressed the necessity amid evolving healthcare demands and the prohibitive expenses in private facilities, which often leave families in despair.
The CM envisioned the institute as a one-of-a-kind hub with no peers, appealing for unified efforts to meet deadlines. Minister Veena George celebrated the initiative, noting the government’s proactive response to urgent needs and teasing a revolutionary drug subsidy program for transplant recipients.
Occupying 20 acres, the project unfolds in phases: phase one at Rs 299 crore (plus Rs 99 crore for gear) delivers 350 beds, 14 departments, 10 theaters, dialysis, and high-dependency units in an eight-floor marvel. It doubles as a training and research powerhouse with 31 academic programs, all backed by KIIFB funding, heralding equitable healthcare for all.
