New Funding Boost for Health Innovation: ₹1,500 Crore Programme Begins

Delhi – On Wednesday, the central government unveiled the third phase of its Biomedical Research Career Programme, earmarking ₹1,500 crore to accelerate health research and innovation.

The total package splits into ₹1,000 crore from the Department of Biotechnology and ₹500 crore contributed by the Welcome Trust, a London charitable foundation. Officials say the collaboration will strengthen India’s biomedical research on a global scale.

Science Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh said the initiative will nurture a range of professionals, from basic scientists and clinical investigators to public‑health specialists and research managers, while promoting cross‑disciplinary projects.

He noted that the nation’s bio‑economy has grown dramatically, from $10 billion in 2014 to more than $195 billion in 2025, with a target of $300 billion by 2030. The country now hosts roughly 12,000 biotech start‑ups and is recognized among the world’s leading vaccine manufacturers.

The ceremony also featured dialogues with researchers who will receive fellowships and grants, and a showcase of scientific achievements expected to influence long‑term health outcomes.
